Tadoba Safari & Game Drive Guide

Safari drives inside Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve are the best way to experience the park's forests, waterbodies and rich wildlife. Carefully regulated jeep safaris allow visitors to enter selected tourism zones and observe tigers, leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs and a wide variety of deer and birdlife in their natural habitat.

Types of safari in Tadoba

The forest department primarily conducts safaris in open 4x4 vehicles (popularly called jeep safaris) accompanied by an authorised guide. Depending on the season and current regulations, visitors can usually choose from:

  • Core zone jeep safaris – classic game drives inside the core tourism zones of the tiger reserve.
  • Buffer zone jeep safaris – drives in the buffer areas that also offer good chances of sightings.
  • Full-day or photography safaris – special safaris where permitted, with extended time inside the park.
Safari timings & duration

Tadoba safaris normally operate twice a day on open days of the park:

  • Morning safari – starting shortly after sunrise and lasting around 3–4 hours.
  • Afternoon safari – beginning in mid-afternoon and ending around sunset.

Exact reporting times and durations can vary with the season and local sunrise/sunset times. Travellers should always check the latest schedule in their permit or with their lodge a day before the drive.

Important safari gates & zones

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve is accessed through several entry gates. Some of the better-known ones include:

  • Moharli
  • Kolara
  • Navegaon
  • Khutwanda
  • Padmapur, Zari and other buffer entries

Each gate is linked to different safari routes and waterbodies. The choice of gate often decides which parts of the park you explore, so it is important to match your lodge location with your permits.

How Tadoba safari booking works

A limited number of jeeps are allowed to enter each tourism gate per safari round. Permits are either booked in advance through the official system or, in some cases, through a current-booking counter operated by the forest department. When you request an itinerary through this website, our associated travel partners can:

  • Advise you on which gates are practical for your travel dates and lodge choice
  • Check safari availability for different zones
  • Arrange permits, vehicle and guide (as per local rules)
  • Combine Tadoba safaris with other destinations if required
Safari etiquette & rules

To keep the park safe for wildlife and enjoyable for all visitors, a few simple rules are essential:

  • Always carry your original ID used for the safari booking.
  • Reach the gate 30–45 minutes before the safari start time.
  • Remain seated inside the vehicle; do not stand or lean out.
  • Keep noise to a minimum; avoid loud conversations and music.
  • Do not throw food or litter from the vehicle.
  • Avoid asking the driver to chase animals or crowd a sighting.

Following these guidelines helps ensure ethical sightings and supports the long-term conservation of Tadoba's wildlife.

What to carry on safari

Weather in Tadoba can change quickly, from cool mornings to warm afternoons. A small day-pack with the following items is usually sufficient:

  • Light jacket or fleece in winter months
  • Cap or hat and sunglasses
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Binoculars and camera (with extra batteries/memory cards)
  • Dust protection such as scarf or mask for dry tracks
  • Any personal medicines you may require
Safety & disclaimer

All safaris are operated under the supervision of Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve authorities. Forest guides and drivers are trained to follow prescribed routes and safety norms; visitors are requested to cooperate with them at all times.

Tiger and other wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed. Every safari is a matter of chance and patience – sometimes the reward is a big cat, and at other times it is the forest atmosphere, birdlife and quiet waterbodies that make the experience memorable.

Planning your Tadoba safari

For best results, visitors are encouraged to:

  • Plan at least 2–3 nights with multiple safaris, instead of a single drive
  • Share flexible dates so that permits can be matched with availability
  • Mention preferred gates or zones if you have any specific interest
  • Inform your planner about photography, birding or family requirements
